12 Proven Ways to Speed Up Your WordPress Website

Visitors expect pages to load in a couple of seconds. If your site is slow, many people leave before it even appears — and Google notices too. The good news is that most WordPress sites can be made much faster with the right fixes.

1. Choose good hosting

Your host is the foundation. Cheap shared hosting is often overloaded. A quality managed WordPress host or a well-configured cloud server makes a big difference.

2. Use page caching

Caching saves a ready-made copy of each page so the server doesn’t rebuild it for every visitor. Tools like LiteSpeed Cache or WP Rocket handle this well.

3. Add a CDN

A content delivery network serves your files from servers close to each visitor, so pages load fast around the world.

4. Optimise your images

Large images are the most common cause of slow pages. Compress them, resize them to the size they are shown and use modern formats like WebP or AVIF.

5. Lazy load images and videos

Only load media when the visitor scrolls near it. This speeds up the first view of the page.

6. Remove unused plugins

Every plugin can add scripts and database queries. Delete anything you don’t truly need.

7. Use a lightweight theme

Some themes load heavy sliders, fonts and scripts on every page. A lean or custom theme keeps things fast.

8. Limit heavy page builder layouts

Page builders are great, but deeply nested sections add extra code. Keep layouts simple and use global styles.

9. Load fonts smartly

Use only the font weights you need, host them locally where possible and preload the most important ones.

10. Delay non-essential scripts

Chat widgets, social embeds and tracking scripts can wait until after the page has loaded.

11. Clean up your database

Old revisions, spam comments and leftover plugin data slow down queries. Clean them out regularly.

12. Keep PHP and WordPress updated

Newer versions of PHP and WordPress are faster and more secure. Updating is one of the easiest wins.

Measure before and after

Test your site with Google PageSpeed Insights and focus on Core Web Vitals: LCP (loading), CLS (layout shift) and INP (responsiveness). Make one change at a time and test again.
