The Gutenberg Block Editor: A Simple Guide for Business Owners
Gutenberg is the built-in WordPress editor. Learn how blocks work and how to update your pages with confidence — no developer needed.

If your website runs on a modern WordPress setup, you edit content with the block editor, also known as Gutenberg. Once you understand blocks, updating your site becomes quick and easy.
What is a block?
Everything on a page is a block: a paragraph, a heading, an image, a button, a column layout or a video. You add, move and style blocks like building with bricks.
Adding a block
Click the + button, search for the block you need (for example “image” or “button”) and click to insert it. You can also type / on a new line to search quickly.
Moving and styling blocks
Select a block to see its toolbar. Use the arrows to move it up or down. The settings panel on the right lets you change colours, spacing, alignment and more.
Patterns and reusable blocks
Patterns are ready-made groups of blocks — like a hero section or pricing table — that you can insert in one click. Synced patterns update everywhere when you edit them once, which is perfect for things like call-to-action banners.
Tips for a tidy page
- Use headings in order (H2, then H3) to keep pages clear.
- Keep paragraphs short and easy to scan.
- Use your theme’s preset colours and fonts for a consistent look.
- Preview on mobile before you publish.
When you need custom blocks
If you keep rebuilding the same complex layout, a custom block can save hours and keep your brand consistent. Developers can create blocks that look exactly right and are simple for your team to use.
We build custom block themes and blocks that make editing easy — see our custom theme development service.
