ACF and Custom Post Types Explained
Custom post types and Advanced Custom Fields turn WordPress into a powerful content system. Here is what they are and when to use them.

Out of the box, WordPress has posts and pages. But many businesses need to manage other kinds of content — team members, products, case studies, events or locations. That is where custom post types and custom fields come in.
What is a custom post type?
A custom post type is a new type of content with its own section in the dashboard. For example, a “Team” post type lets you add each team member separately, and the website displays them in a consistent layout.
What is ACF?
Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) lets you add structured fields to your content — like job title, photo, LinkedIn link or event date. Editors fill in simple boxes instead of formatting everything by hand.
Why this is better
- Consistency: every item looks the same on the website.
- Easy editing: no design skills needed to add new items.
- Filtering and search: visitors can filter events by date or properties by location.
- Reuse: show the same data in many places, like a team list on About and Contact.
Common examples
- Properties for real estate websites
- Courses and instructors
- Restaurant menus
- Case studies and portfolios
- Store locations with maps
